The Detroit Lakes Tribune accepts community calendar items for publication online and, space permitting, in our Wednesday and Sunday print editions. Ole's Ride: The 13th Annual Ole's Ride for Hospice departs at noon from Billy's Corner Bar in Vergas, with registration from 10-11:30 a.m. A meal, silent auction and live music by The Fat Cats follow the ride through Minnesota lakes country. Cost is $25 per bike, $15 for an additional rider, and includes a T-shirt, meal and chances for door prizes at each stop. Boats and Bars XVI: The Lakes Area Parrot Heads will present their 16th Annual Boats and Bars event, 10 a.m. to midnight at various locations around town, starting and ending at Zorbaz. Other locations include the sandbar between Big and Little Detroit, Lakeside Tavern, Long Bridge, Holiday Inn and Hub 41. Performers include Two Lone Pirates, Island Time, Rachael Ianiro, Motu, The Castaways, Chuck Fox, and Pirates, Guitars and Beachfront Bars. Tickets on sale at Zorbaz or from Parrot Heads members. Will be held rain or shine... in case of rain, event will take place at American Legion Post 15 in Detroit Lakes.

Trumpeter Triumph: Discover the world of trumpeter swans, North America’s largest waterfowl species. Learn how this bird was nearly decimated and how Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge played a critical role in its amazing recovery. Meet at 10 a.m. in Tamarac's Discovery Center before heading out into the Refuge in search of these beautiful birds and their young. All are welcome. Breakfast Fundraiser: The Marine Corps League, Lakes Area Leathernecks will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Club, 810 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes. Suggested donation is $8 for a meal including scrambled eggs; pancakes or French toast; sausage or bacon; and coffee or orange juice. Plenty of tables, lots of space. All are welcome. Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, wildlife-themed movie, "Is That Skunk?" will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Utterly recognizable yet still mysterious, these black and white creatures inhabit woods and neighborhoods all across America. What is it like to be a skunk? Find out as scientists track them day and night to reveal some smelly secrets! All are welcome. Anime and Manga Club: Anime and manga fans are invited to geek out over their favorite shows and stories, starting at 4 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. A different theme is discussed at each monthly meet-up, and snacks are always available.

Teen Book vs. Movie Club: Area teens are invited to join a Book vs. Movie Club at 4 p.m. in the main meeting room of the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave., for this month's Book Vs. Lakefront Public Input Meeting: The City of Detroit Lakes invites members of the community to bring their ideas about future development of the City Park, Pavilion and West Lake Drive to a public input meeting set from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Pavilion (1361 Washington Ave.).

Tuesdays in the Park: Detroit Lakes' Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series comes to a close with a 7 p.m. performance by the Lakes Area Community Concert Band under the City Park Bandshell. Picnic hosted by Fuller Center for Housing starts at 5:30 p.m. Seating is limited, so bring your own blankets or chairs. Admission is a free will donation; all proceeds from the picnic benefit Fuller Center's local housing projects, while donations for the concert go to support the artists.

Bake Sale: The Title Team, located at 808 Minnesota Ave., Detroit Lakes, will be hosting a bake sale for charity throughout the day. Homemade baked goods can be purchased for a free will offering; proceeds will go to support local charitable organizations or families in need.

Library Board: The Detroit Lakes Library Board meets in the library's main meeting room at 6 p.m. Open to the public.

After Hours Book Club: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 7 p.m. for the library's first after hours book club meeting. We will discuss this month's book, "Anxious People" by Fredrick Backman, which tells the story of eight strangers and a bank robbery that went wrong. Trucks and Tunes: The Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club is sponsoring an evening of food, fun and live music at the Detroit Lakes City Park, starting at 5 p.m. A variety of food trucks will be gathered in the parking lot until 8 p.m., serving up a host of summer favorites, while over at the bandshell, Whiskey Business will be performing. Admission is free, though the cost of food may vary from truck to truck.

Jeff Staley Farewell: A sendoff celebration for departing Detroit Mountain General Manager Jeff Staley will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area. Spanky's Foodie truck will be on site, and Hardwood Groove will perform from 6 to 10 p.m. There will be a short program at 6:45 p.m.

Tommy James and the Shondells: Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino will host an 8 p.m. concert by Tommy James and the Shondells, makers of such hits as "Crimson and Clover," "Mony Mony" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion." Tickets are available at the casino box office or online at starcasino.com .

Snellman Days: The annual Snellmay Days celebration gets underway at 7 a.m. with coffee and rolls from the VFW, followed by breakfast at 7:30 a.m. inside Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Native traditional food will be served at the Hemp and Artisan Market Store booth from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Wolf Lake VFW Auxiliary will start serving up lunch at 10:30 a.m. (their booth will be open until 4 p.m.). Bingo from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and again from 1 to 2:30 p.m., DJ Karaoke from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rock painting from 12-3 p.m. The drawing for mayor will be at 2 p.,m., followed by a raffle drawing at 2:15.

Free Movie: A free screening of the movie "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" will take place at 10 a.m. inside Washington Square Cinema 7, Detroit Lakes. Doors and concessions open at 9:30 a.m.

Zorbaz Beer Run: The Zorbaz Beer Run returns after a two-year absence, starting at 2 p.m. Participants willrun a one-mile loop, up to three times, and they can stop for beer after every loop. Knights of Columbus Breakfast: The local Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 am. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. All are welcome.

Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, wildlife-themed movie, "The Civilian Conservation Corps" will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Celebrate Labor Day and the work of the CCC. Roosevelt’s civilian conservation corps put more than three million young men in the nation’s parks, forests, and farms. This film interweaves rich archival imagery with the personal accounts of CCC veterans to tell the story of the boldest New Deal experiments. All are welcome; run time is 60 minutes. Guided Kayak Cruise: Join up with other paddlers for an interpretive kayak cruise at 3 p.m. on North Tamarac Lake. On your journey, you’ll learn about the many uses of wetland plants as food and as traditional medicine. We’ll paddle along the wilderness area and be on the lookout for wildlife as well. Bring your own kayak and life jacket and meet at North Tamarac Lake Access. Life jackets are required.

Sustainability 101-Composting: Are you interested in learning more about composting? If you have a yard that generates almost any kind of green waste, you probably have the right ingredients and enough room to set up your own compost bin. Join Sandy Gunderson of Becker County Environmental Services at 7 p.m. for a look at different styles of composting, to help you better understand which style works for you. You will leave with a better understanding of nature’s recycling process.

Writers Group: Writers and prospective writers seeking encouragement, feedback and collaboration are welcome to join the Detroit Lakes Public Library's Writers' Group, which meets at the library at 3 p.m.

Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion: The 2022 Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion will take place on Sept. 2-5 at the WMSTR grounds in Rollag, Minn. Once you pay the admission fee, you can enjoy a full day of steam engines, parades, live music, crafts, blacksmithing and threshing demonstrations and hundreds of other exhibits at no additional cost. Laddies Loppet Mountain Bike Races: Maplelag Resort in rural Callaway will be hosting the 10th race in the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series, known as Laddies Loppet, on Sept. 3-4. Competitions will be held in both the cross country (kids comp, citizen, sport, comp and elite) and short track (open men's and women's, kids comp, citizen, sport, comp and expert/elite) categories. Racing action begins on Saturday with the traditional cross country races, concluding on Sunday with the short track races. This is the 21st annual event (it was canceled in 2020). Saturday Critter Tales: Every Saturday through Sept. 3, join resident volunteer Sandi Wicklund at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge for some fascinating personal stories about wildlife encounters during her many seasons at refuges throughout the country. Learn about wildlife viewing etiquette and find out the best places to view wildlife at Tamararc. All ages welcome. Meet at 1 p.m. by the Tamarack tree in front of the visitor center for this 45-minute program.
