MultiVersus features a roster of various Warner Bros.-owned characters. Players can grind or pay to unlock more, but four are currently free.
MuiltiVersus, Player First Games' smash-hit IP-mashup fighting game, features iconic characters from across a number of Warner Bros. Discovery-owned properties, with free characters changing every two weeks. While the game is currently in open beta, it's also MultiVersus' soft launch. An end date for the beta has yet to be announced, and a seasonal structure will begin on August 9. With no obvious conclusion in sight, it seems players can continue battling each other in wild two-on-two fights for a while yet.
The major selling point of MultiVersus is its roster of characters. In this kind of game, many of the playable fighters are in their element - Batman and Arya Stark are no strangers to combat. Others, like Bugs Bunny or Scooby-Doo's Shaggy and Velma, are far less expected. The result is a fresh, wacky experience with exciting gameplay and a touch of humor that gives MultiVersus a shot to take Smash Bros.' crown.

While players currently have the option to purchase Founder's Packs, MultiVersus is free-to-play at its core. It takes a page from other character-based free-to-play titles like League of Legends - locking the majority of its characters behind an in-game currency grind or real life paywall while providing a small selection of free fighters. Founder's Packs provide a character tickets, a premium currency to unlock more characters; more expensive packs unsurprisingly provide more tickets. Still, even without paying, players can enjoy battling with the current free-to-play roster.
MultiVersus may be free-to-play, but unless players want to commit to a currency grind or purchase a Founder's Pack their access is largely limited to four of MultiVersus's 19 fighters. The roster is designed to provide a wide range of abilities and gameplay while keeping the basic touchstones intact from character to character. This is largely accomplished through MultiVersus's character class system, which designates roles like Bruiser, Assassin, and Support. The presence of classes might feel a bit off for a platform fighter, but the emphasis placed on two-player teams increases the options for specialized characters while decreasing the importance of self-sustainability.
A fairly even spread of character classes is available in the current free roster, though there's no Mage. Players will need to unlock one with in-game currency or purchasing a Founder's Pack if they want to try the class this week. Otherwise, the following characters are currently free to play in MultiVersus:
These four characters should be a good place to start for players looking to get into MultiVersus. The variety of classes should provide a good mix of playstyles and three beloved characters plus an adorable fuzzy creature to ensure that most players will find a fighter they like. These characters will be around until August 9, when MultiVersus enters its first season. Two new fighters, the titular Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith from Rick and Morty, will join the roster, and it's likely that four more heroes will become free for a time while the current four return to their more exclusive status. Plenty more fighters coming to MultiVersus' roster have been leaked, but until then, players can enjoy the current selection of fighters included in the game's open beta.
